The Southwest Georgia Homeschool Association will hold its annual used book sale and new homeschoolers meeting from 2 p.m.-4 p.m. Friday at Harvest Temple Church of God, located on Fussell Road. The community sale is open from 2 p.m.-3 p.m., with an informational meeting for new homeschoolers from 3 p.m.-4 p.m.
Attendance does not obligate visitors to membership, but does provide information about getting started with homeschooling both in Southwest Georgia and the state. Many longtime homeschoolers plan to be available to answer questions.
Homeschooling is a rapidly-growing educational option in the United States. Data collected by the U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics shows that, as of 2007, an estimated 1.5 million children in the America are homeschooled, up from 1.1 million in 2003.
Official Georgia figures from 1988-1997, the most recent available, suggest that the annual rate of growth has historically been at 21 percent. As of the end of the last school year, 157 families were registered homeschoolers in Dougherty County, Lee had 105 and Worth County reported about 70. Terrell County figures are currently unavailable.
Southwest Georgia Homeschool Association is the area's oldest homeschool support group, providing families with support and resources since 1985. Last year's membership roster had about 100 families, representing roughly 12 Southwest Georgia counties.
