Who: This exhibition features material from films rated PG-13 or R. Objects in the exhibition feature nudity, and video clips playing in the galleries feature graphic violence. Docents do not focus on these works with students on guided tours and will select objects that are age-appropriate. MIA suggest parents/educators review the exhibition catalogue to determine if it’s appropriate for their children/students. This exhibition has a rating of R.
Adult supervision is not provided. Parents who drop off their teens affirm and acknowledge that their teenagers are capable to being responsible for themselves. The MIA's Family Center is a drop-in space where parents and younger siblings may enjoy kid-friendly books and toys or just let off a little energy.

Please plan to meet our docent, David Fortney, in the atrium of the Target Wing at 11am for our 11:15am tour. To be clear, the group is NOT meeting in the main 3rd Ave entrance area between MIA and CTC.

Directions to Target Wing's atrium: First check your backpacks and oversized bags (and coats) at MIA’s free coat check (through the doors to your right from the main 3rd Ave entrance area between MIA and CTC). Then return to entrance area between MIA and CTC and walk outside through the doors (now on your right) on the opposite side from 3rd Ave, walk straight across Target Park and then through the doors into the Target Wing's atrium. See the first floor map (PDF) if you haven't been to this atrium before.

Explore the creative process behind one of the most inventive filmmakers of our generation.

Taking inspiration from Guillermo del Toro’s extraordinary imagination, this unique exhibition reveals his creative process through a collection of paintings, drawings, maquettes, artifacts, and concept film art, all culled from Bleak House, his creative haven and cherished home base located in Los Angeles.

Rather than a traditional chronology or filmography, the exhibition is organized thematically, beginning with visions of death and the afterlife; continuing through explorations of magic, occultism, horror, and monsters; and concluding with representations of innocence and redemption.

Beginning with Cronos (1993 - R) and continuing through The Devil’s Backbone (2001 - R), Hellboy (2004 - PG13), Pan’s Labyrinth (2006 - R), Pacific Rim (2013 - PG13), and Crimson Peak (2015 - R), among many other film, television, and book projects, Guillermo del Toro has reinvented the genres of horror, fantasy, and science fiction. Working with a team of craftsmen, artists, and actors — and referencing a wide range of cinematic, pop-culture, and art-historical sources — del Toro recreates the lucid dreams he experienced as a child in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Guillermo del Toro: At Home with Monsters is the latest exhibition in a series exploring the theme of creative process. MIA organized this exhibition because it asks: “Where does creativity come from?”

Teens are encouraged do some preparation before the tour so as to get the most from this exhibit:

4. Read Guillermo del Toro: At Home with Monsters: Inside His Films, Notebooks, and Collections, by Guillermo del Toro.
5. Read Cabinet of Curiosities: My Notebooks, Collections, and Other Obsessions, by Guillermo del Toro with Marc Scott Zicree.
6. Read Hellboy II: The Art of the Movie, introduction by Guillermo del Toro. 
7. Watch a Guillermo del Toro movie, such as Pacific Rim (2013 - PG13) or Hellboy (2004 - PG13), or at least a trailer.

MIA Policies

• Do not touch the works of art. Stay at least a foot away and refrain from leaning on the walls or display cases.
• Keep voices low.
• Food, beverages, and chewing gum are not allowed in the galleries.
• Running and rough play are prohibited.
• Only pencils may be used in the galleries: please, keep pens and markers at home.
• Use a clipboard or notebook when writing or sketching in the galleries; refrain from using the walls or display cases as support.
• Backpacks and oversized bags are not permitted in the galleries. Bags may be checked at MIA’s free coat check. (Medical packs are permitted.)

You may continue touring without the docent at the conclusion of our tour provided that at least 1 adult stays with each group of students. However, once you exit the Special Exhibition area, you will not be able to re-enter. Our docent will be happy to give you directions to the areas that interest you. The organizer and her son plan to continue touring until hunger motivates them toward Agra Culture Restaurant on the mezzanine level for lunch.

Please arrive by:

Please plan to arrive before 11am in order to have plenty of time to find parking, check in with the organizer, visit the bathrooms (check your coats) and otherwise be prepared for our tour to start on time. Please plan to be early to avoid being late due to inadequate maps, confusing road signs, road construction, heavy traffic, parking difficulties, inclement weather or uncooperative children.

Please, no food or beverages in the galleries. Enjoy a treat, meal, coffee, or juice at Agra Culture Coffee Shop and Cafe just off the main lobby or Agra Culture Restaurant on the mezzanine level. 

Parking information:

The parking ramp is directly south of the CTC-MIA complex. The ramp entrances are located on 3rd Ave S between E 24th St and E 25th St. There is a surface lot directly across the street from the ramp with an entrance on 3rd Ave S and another on E 25th St. There is an additional lot northeast of the museum with entrances on 3rd Ave S, E 24th St, and Clinton Ave S. 

Parking is $5 for the first 2 hours and $1 for each additional hour with a daily maximum or lost ticket fee of $12. Please follow instructions at the pay stations. Be aware that there is a possibility of event rates.

Directions:

From the east on I-94 West (from St. Paul), exit at 11th St and follow 11th St exit to the second stoplight. Turn left onto 3rd Ave S. Continue on 3rd Ave until you see the MIA on your right, just south of the intersection of E 24th St and 3rd Ave S.

From Downtown Minneapolis, drive south on 3rd Ave (away from the Mississippi River) until you see the MIA on your right, just south of the intersection of E 24th St and 3rd Ave S.

From the west on I-394 East (from St Louis Park), exit on 12th St and drive 4 blocks, turn right on La Salle Ave. Take La Salle to Franklin Ave and turn left on Franklin and proceed to 3rd Ave S. Turn right on 3rd Ave and proceed to the MIA.

From the north and northwest on I-94 East (from St Cloud), take the Hennepin/Lyndale exit. When Hennepin and Lyndale divide, continue on Lyndale Ave S to E 24th St. Turn left and proceed to 3rd Ave S. Turn right onto 3rd Ave.

From the north and east on I-35W South (from Duluth), exit to I-94 West then exit at 11th St and follow 11th St exit to the second stoplight. Turn left onto 3rd Ave S. Continue on 3rd Ave until you see the MIA on your right, just south of the intersection of E 24th St and 3rd Ave S.

From the south on I-35W North (from Rochester), take the 31st St/Lake St exit and turn left onto 31st St. Drive to 1st Ave S and turn right and drive to 24th St and turn right. Proceed to 3rd Ave. Turn right onto 3rd Ave. The entrance to the MIA is on the right.
