Description
This is a 7-workshop series led by teaching artist Cindy Gipple and organized by Nic Rosenau. It was designed by Séamus Blake, Cindy Gipple, and Angela Hed Vincent.
This unique series of workshops is limited to just 10 students ensuring individualized attention and plenty of “elbow room” for the creative process.
Students who complete the series will be presented with an embroidered DIY Printmakers patch and a signed Certificate of Skill Mastery at the final workshop on Wednesday, May 2, 2018.
Over the course of the first 5 workshops, students will create a 7x7-inch two-pocket hardcover case holding a 5x3½-inch hardcover meander personal symbol book and a 5x3½-inch softcover pamphlet-stitched book, using their own Suminagashi marbled paper for their front and back covers (and in some cases endpages). The hardcover case, hardcover meander and softcover pamphlet will feature each student's own personal symbol as a framed coverplate. At the sixth workshop, students will use their own Suminagashi marbled paper to create an origami wallet with interior sewn pamphlet. A final stand-alone workshop will explore the printing press.
Suminagashi Paper Marbling
Wednesday, October 4, 2017
1:00pm – 2:30pm (90 minutes)
Suminagashi ( 墨 流 し ) [sue-me-NAH-gah-she] paper marbling is the ancient Japanese technique of decorating paper with inks. It is believed to be the oldest form of marbling, originating in China over 2,000 years ago and practiced in Japan by Shinto priests as early as the 12th century. Suminagashi means literally “ink-floating” and involves doing just that. Japanese Sumi-e inks are dropped carefully to float on a still water surface and then blown across to form delicate swirls, after which the ink is picked up by laying a sheet of paper atop the ink covered water.
Combining fluid mechanics with artistic talent, an artist can control the floating pigments to form concentric rings of colors with a brush, other tools, or even their breath to create images suggestive of mountain ranges, landscapes, clouds and animals before printing them on a sheet of paper.

Over the remainder of the series, your completed Suminagashi marbled papers will be used to create a 5x3½-inch hardcover meander personal symbol book, a 7x7-inch two-pocket hardcover case, a softcover pamphlet-stitched book, and an origami wallet.
Personal Symbol Printing
Wednesday, November 1, 2017
1:00pm – 2:30pm (90 minutes)
Design a personal symbol to mount and print on the printing press!
A personal symbol is an image that is unique to you! Students should arrive with an idea for their own personal symbols. Before the workshop, students should take time to think about objects and actions that carry personal meaning for themselves, considering images that represent important aspects of their personalities, their heritage, or convey an important message about who they are. No numbers, letters or family crests, please!
The images will be cut into a Speedball Flexible Printing Plate. These plates are made of a vinyl material that is soft and flexible and can be cut with school scissors or linoleum cutters.
Once all personal symbols are created, the symbols will be placed together on a print plate, inked with a teal ink, and then each student will get to crank the printing press handle to run one sheet through the printing press to print his or her own copy.

Your completed print will be used to as the interior of a 5x3½-inch hardcover meander symbol book. The result will be a unique limited-edition meander book.
Hardcover Meander Symbol Book
Wednesday, December 6, 2017
1:00pm – 2:30pm (90 minutes)
Create a 5x3.5-inch hardcover 10-page meander book. The meander (or maze) book gets its name from the way the paper is cut and folded to make the pages.
The meander will contain all 10 of our group's personal symbols and be covered using your Suminagashi marbled paper. Your own personal symbol will then become a coverplate framed in charcoal grey.
The result will be a unique limited-edition meander book.
Hardcover Case
Wednesday, February 7, 2018
1:00pm – 2:30pm (90 minutes)
Create a 7x7-inch hardcover case with book tape using your Suminagashi marbled paper for the front and back covers and endpages and your personal symbol as a coverplate framed in charcoal grey.
The pockets will be added at the March Workshop.
Softcover Pamphlet-Stitched Book
Wednesday, March 7, 2018
1:00pm – 2:30pm (90 minutes)
Create a 5x3½-inch softcover pamphlet-stitched book using your Suminagashi marbled paper for the cover and your personal symbol as a coverplate framed in charcoal grey. The inner pages will be 8 folded blank sheets of drawing paper.
Then create two charcoal grey pockets for your hardcover case to hold both your hardcover meander symbol book and your newly created softcover pamphlet.
Origami Wallet
Wednesday, April 4, 2018
1:00pm – 3:00pm (2 hours)
Create an Origami wallet with sewn pamphlet from your Suminagashi marbled paper.
This wallet, designed by Hedi Kyle, has a tuck-in closure and a card pocket perfectly sized to hold a homeschool ID, a bus pass and/or an ATM card.
Choose from a selection of non-patterned bright cover-weight paper for the cover for your sewn pamphlet and from a variety of text papers for the 6 folded inner pages.
Pressure Printed Poster with Sign Press
Wednesday, May 2, 2018
1:00pm – 3:30pm (2½ hours)
Create an 11x17-inch poster and experience the power of multiples in printmaking!
Begin by creating a template for your own multi-tone print design through a process of paper cutting and collage. Then print three impressions of your individual design on a Vandercook printing press using midnight blue ink on the paper color of your choice.
Then set your own letters by hand, choosing your font and letter size, and use the sign press to print your word or phrase in black ink over your pressure print image — then return your letters to their proper trays.
Turn each impression into a unique monoprint by adding color and other embellishments by hand.
This poster will be unique to you! Students should arrive with an idea for their poster image and their printed word or short phrase. Before the workshop, students should take time to think about objects, actions, words and phrases that carry personal meaning for themselves, considering images and words that represent important aspects of their personalities, their heritage, or convey an important message about who they are.

Make sure your email filters recognize this address as a legitimate sender. If you don't receive this email, please check your spam, junk or bulk mail folder. Contact the organizer if you are unable to find it; if you receive no response to your email, please call the organizer.
You are not officially registered until the organizer receives your payment.

Payment plan
You do have the option of making monthly payments (6 payments of $20 plus a final payment of $19) by arrangement with the event organizer. Please be aware that while you may make monthly payments, you may NOT renege on your commitment to pay the full amount, even if you withdraw your child(ren) from the series before it is complete — no matter what the reason for the withdrawal. The organzier simply cannot afford to cover your family's fees out of her own pocket. You MAY arrange to sell your remaining workshops to a replacement, but you will remain responsible for ensuring the organizer is fully reimbursed (that is, if your replacement fails to make the payments, you will still need to make them).
