Description
Please plan to meet our docent in the atrium of the Target Wing at 10:15am for our 10:30am tour. To be clear, the group is NOT meeting in the main 3rd Ave entrance area between MIA and CTC.
Directions to Target Wing's atrium: First check your backpacks and oversized bags (and coats) at MIA’s free coat check (through the doors to your right from the main 3rd Ave entrance area between MIA and CTC). Then return to entrance area between MIA and CTC and walk outside through the doors (now on your right) on the opposite side from 3rd Ave, walk straight across Target Park and then through the doors into the Target Wing's atrium. See the first floor map (PDF) if you haven't been to this atrium before. (It is possible to reach the atrium by traveling through Mia but it takes a while, a few staircases, and several turns.)
More than 1200 years ago, two ancient cities were lost to natural disasters and the rising tides of the Mediterranean Sea. Two decades ago, underwater archaeologist Franck Goddio and his team discovered those cities, revealing monumental statues, religious images carved in stone, exquisite jewelry, and delicate ceramics—and a greater understanding of life during the age of the pharaohs. Don’t miss this epic story of their discovery.
Teens and parents are encouraged do some preparation before the tour so as to get the most from this exhibit:
For more information, visit the Exhibit website at the Minneapolis Institute of Art.
Sunken Cities: Egypt’s Lost Worlds at the Saint Louis Art Museum. The epic story of one of the greatest finds in the history of underwater archaeology, a story that revealed two lost cities of ancient Egypt submerged under the Mediterranean Sea for over a thousand years
Sunken cities: Egypt’s lost worlds at the British Museum. Submerged under the sea for over a thousand years, two lost cities of ancient Egypt were recently rediscovered. Their story is told for the first time in this blockbuster exhibition.
Osiris: Egypt's Sunken Mysteries at the Museum Rietberg. Saved from the depths off Egypt’s Mediterranean coast: the spectacular exhibition shows almost 300 statues and cult objects, sarcophagi and sacred images from sixteen centuries. They come from two legendary towns, Thonis-Heracleion and Canopus, which sank below the sea and were lost in the 8th century AD. Old questions are answered, new stories are recounted.
Osiris, Egypt’s Sunken Mysteries at the Institut du Monde Arabe. An exceptional exhibition revealing one of the founding myths of ancient Egypt by evoating what were the Mysteries of Osiris! This unprecedented exhibition throws light on the discoveries by submarine exploration of the IEASM in Aboukir Bay, undertaken by Franck Goddio, director of the excavation and curator of the exhibition.
Sunken Civilizations | Franck Goddio. Since the early 1980’s Franck Goddio and his team from the Institut Européen d’Archéologie Sous-Marine (IEASM) have worked throughout the world on a number of different underwater archaeological projects.
