Who: Rapids Archery Club recommends these workshops for ages 10 and up due to the skills required to construct the equipment. Children must be accompanied as responsible adult. Parents will be expected to assist with class. Non-enrolled siblings may accompany parents but may not participate in class.
How much:
Cost for Child/Student: $45.00

Description
This is a three-session event on Tuesdays, January 6, 20 and 27.
The volunteers at Rapids Archery Club are developing this new DIY Archer workshop! The plan is for the kids will make and decorate PVC bows, learn to fletch arrows, make a quiver and learn to shoot. Kids will also get to try a variety of different Club-owned bows for shooting as well as use the PVC bows that they make.
This workshop takes place on three Tuesdays in January: Jan 6, 11am–1pm with a bag lunch, Jan 20, 12pm-2pm, and Jan 27 from 12:30pm-2:30pm with a snack. If we run into a time shortage, we can request to add the first Tuesday in February (Feb 3).
Rapids Archery Club also offers open shooting to the public in their indoor range on Tuesday mornings, 9am–1pm, from November thru mid April. There is a $5 shooting fee for the non-member public. There is no open shooting on dates where the club is holding an event. The building operation is dependent on a volunteer club member so please call the clubhouse at 763-862-8163 to verify that the building is truly open for shooting. This would be with parental supervision (no instructors), your own equipment and following all club safety rules and protocols.
Rapids Archery Club's homeschool classes will be held Wed, Feb 25, Mar 4 and Mar 11, 10am–11:30am ($5/week), so students will be able to continue to work on their archery skills. Students will learn the ten steps of shooting and range safety. Rapids Archery Club will provide bows (compound or recurve), arrows, targets, and certified archery instructors.
DIY Skill Archer |
To earn the Archer skill patch, the kids need to learn 3 archery related skills, out of 9 options. The options for this skill patch are ...
- Build a Bow (Pro Level): Completely customize your archery experience by creating your own bow and shooting some arrows with your custom bow.
- Set up your bow: Do some research and find a bow that fits you just right. Explain why your bow is right for you.
- Practice your shot: The right form comes from practice and is essential for a good shot. Practice your shot. Share any tips you have.
- Make a Quiver: You can use all sorts of materials to create a system for holding your arrows. Get creative and build one! Then put it to use.
- Fletch an Arrow: Add a personal touch by putting feathers on your arrows.
- Add Arrow Points: Add inserts to your arrow shafts so you can attach points, or haft a wooden shaft. Explain how you did it.
- Crest Arrows: Get artistic and add some flare to your arrow shafts. Paint your arrows.
- Make a Bowstring (Pro Level): Turn several strands of fiber into strong string for your bow. Don't forget to add knocking points!
- Build a target: Build something solid to shoot at and hit it with your arrow.
About DIY
DIY is a global community of creative kids who are passionate about learning new skills and meeting others that share our passion. DIY clubs are the best way to make this happen because they allow us to meet in the real world to collaborate on epic projects, take adventures, host workshops, and practice skills together.
DIY offers an alternative to traditional scouting that is kid-driven with fewer rules and fewer expenses — in fact, participation can be entirely free. There are no dues to a national organization and no uniforms to buy. You can purchase embroidered skill patches, but you can also just earn digital skill patches for no cost.
DIY’s mission is to help members achieve creative autonomy, so the DIY app and website were designed to be used by members without the help of adults. DIY clubs are intended to be enjoyed the same way. If someone can’t really participate in a club independent of an adult, then they’re probably too young. DIY thinks 8 years old is the minimum and that 10 is the ideal starting age. Of course, there is no absolute rule!
DIY Workshops are intended to help members quickly level up a new skill. The best workshops involve a skill expert – ideally an old and wise one – handing down what they know to our new generation. You can host this mentor in your space or visit them where they work or practice their skill. Ideally during the workshop club members will have the opportunity to practice the skill themselves.
DIY Resources:
- Become a DIY member! It's free, but you're encouraged to donate if you can.
- Get the DIY iOS App! and earn digital skill patches. (The Android version is still in the works. You can also earn digital skill patches using the website.)
- DIY skills! Choose a skill, choose a challenge or three, and organize an adventure, a workshop or a collaboration for the group.
- Order DIY patches! Embroidered patches are $4 each plus 49¢ shipping. (Digital patches are free.)
