Hibernation/Getting Ready for Winter
Animals, plants and humans need to prepare for the long winter months. We adapt by pulling out those winter coats, hats and mittens. What about plants and animals? How do they get ready for the winter? We will explore the different ways that animals, plants and humans “bundle” themselves up for the cold months ahead.
Choose one session: 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. or 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Cost $4.29/person/session. Pre-registration is required.

Second Fridays: Nature’s April Foolin’
Discover how plants and animals play tricks to survive: from playing dead, to living in slime and CAMOUFLAGE SUPREME! Can you find them? Come prepared for surprises!
Register for either the morning session from 9:30-11:30am, or the afternoon session from 12:30-2:30pm

$5 for a single class or receive a 10% discount on 3 or more classes.

Winter Recreation: Nordic Skiing for Families
Minnesota’s winter weather has been unpredictable lately, but if we have 4 inches of snow, we’ll be out on it! You will learn the basics of classic Nordic skiing including balancing, how to stop and go, and going up and down gentle hills. You will be prepared to ski Tamarack’s beginner loop!
- Rental equipment available for an additional $5 (please arrive 30 minutes early to allow for check out procedure).
- We recommend you dress in multiple synthetic or wool layers, plus hats and mittens.

Days are shorter and nights are cold: Do you know what the animals (and plants!) are doing? Through games, experimentation and observation, we will explore the many strategies living things use to cope with the Minnesota’s harshest season. Are YOU ready for winter?

It's a Pumpkins Life
Hey, isn't that a life cycle ripening in the garden? Play Life Cycle Bingo and search for plants in all stages of their lives. Start a pumpkin seed investigation. Compare the "insides" of pumpkins and their relatives. Estimate a giant pumpkin's weight. TAKE HOME INVESTIGATIONS!
Como Zoo Homeschool Day -Plants and People (Ages 9 – 15)
Class description:
We depend on plants for more than just food and oxygen. We also depend on plants for fibers and shelter, medicines and healing. Using the North Garden of the Marjorie McNeely Conservatory as our guide, we will uncover the mysteries connecting plants, people, and cultures from around the world.

Como Zoo Homeschool Day -Plants that Care (Ages 5 – 8)
Class description:
Como Zoo Homeschool Class -ENDANGERED SPECIES (Ages 9–15)
Class description: Learn about the conservation programs zoos and conservatories participate in to help endangered species everyday. Meet a variety of rare plants and animals that will give you good reason to make “earth-friendly” choices. Take home information that will empower you to make a difference.

Como Zoo Homeschool Class -PLANT & ANIMAL PARTNERS – IN DEPTH (Ages 9–15)
Class description: Everything in nature is connected through the web of life. In this class, we’ll investigate some of the unique partnerships between plants and animals that make the world an amazing place to explore. In addition to reviewing concepts like food webs and plant and animal interdependencies, we will look deeper into specific plant and animal partnerships.
